The Easiest Way: Full Screen Screenshots

You’ll hear a camera shutter sound (if your volume is on), and a thumbnail of the screenshot will briefly appear in the corner of your screen. The image will be automatically saved to your desktop, ready for you to use.
Capturing a Specific Section of Your Screen
You don’t always need a picture of your entire screen. For times when you only want a specific window or area, use the shortcut Shift + Command (⌘) + 4. Your cursor will change into a crosshair. Click and drag to select the exact rectangle you wish to capture. Let go of the mouse or trackpad button to take the picture. If you change your mind, just press the Escape (Esc) key to cancel.
Taking a Screenshot of a Single Window
Need a clean picture of just one application window, like a browser or a Finder window? Start by pressing Shift + Command (⌘) + 4. Then, press the Spacebar. Your cursor will turn into a little camera icon. Move this camera over any window you want to capture—you’ll see it highlighted in blue. A small control panel will appear at the bottom of your screen, giving you options to capture the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion. You can even set a timer or choose where to save your screenshots, like directly to the Clipboard for pasting into another app.
