This common hiccup occurs because the function keys (F1-F12) often have dual roles, and their default behavior might not be what you prefer. Changing the Default Behavior in Your BIOS

If you’re not comfortable entering the BIOS, HP often provides a simpler software solution. Some HP laptops include a setting directly within Windows. Check for the HP System Event Utility in your installed programs; if it’s there, you might find a setting to toggle the function key behavior. Alternatively, open the Windows Settings, go to Devices, and then Typing. Scroll down to see if there is an option that says, “Use the F1-F12 keys to perform standard functions.” Enabling this box can achieve the same result without a BIOS visit.
When a Quick Toggle is All You Need
For a temporary fix, many HP laptops have a dedicated ‘Fn Lock’ key. Look for a key with a padlock symbol and the letters ‘Fn’ on your keyboard, usually on the Escape key. Pressing Fn + Escape simultaneously will toggle the lock on and off. When the Fn lock is on, the F1-F12 keys will act as the standard function keys. This is a great quick solution if you only need the standard functions for a specific task, like a gaming session.
