Finding the perfect laptop bag or comparing models can be tricky if you’re unsure of your screen’s actual size. Many people assume it’s the entire width of the lid, but screen size is measured differently. Knowing how to find this number yourself is a simple skill that saves time and prevents mistakes when shopping for accessories or a new machine.
The Right Way to Measure Your Screen
To measure your laptop screen correctly, you only need a standard measuring tape. Close the laptop lid to avoid confusion. Place the end of the tape measure at the bottom-left corner of the visible screen area. Stretch it diagonally to the top-right corner of the visible screen. Be careful to measure only the screen itself, not the plastic bezel or frame surrounding it. This diagonal measurement in inches is your official screen size.
Why Measuring the Bezel Gives the Wrong Number
It’s a common error to include the black or colored border around the screen, known as the bezel. If you measure from the outer edges of the laptop’s casing, you will get a larger, inaccurate number. Since screen sizes are standardized by the viewable area, using the wrong measurement could lead you to order a laptop sleeve or case that is too big. Sticking to the lit, active portion of the display ensures you get the correct size every time.
Checking the Size Without a Tape Measure
If you don’t have a tape measure handy, there are other reliable ways to find the information. The simplest method is to check your laptop’s original product specifications. You can find this on the manufacturer’s website using your specific model number, which is usually on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop. Alternatively, the screen size is often included in the operating system’s display settings or listed on the original packaging and sales receipt.
Knowing your laptop’s true screen size is a small but powerful piece of information. With a quick diagonal measurement or a glance at your model specs, you can shop for screen protectors, bags, and even your next laptop with complete confidence.
