The Classic Workhorse: The 2.5-Inch Hard Drive

The most common type is the M.2 SSD, which looks more like a stick of gum than a box. It’s a small, flat circuit board that plugs directly into the motherboard, making it ideal for super-slim laptops. You might also find 2.5-inch SSDs that are the same size as an HDD but are much lighter and emptier inside because they rely on flash memory chips.

If you’re curious about what’s in your own machine, you can usually find out without opening it. Check your laptop’s original specifications or look in your computer’s system information. The physical differences are clear: a heavier, boxy drive is an HDD, while a lightweight gum-stick or a very light 2.5-inch drive is an SSD. Knowing which one you have can help you understand your laptop’s speed and storage capacity.
