It’s a common thought: can you use that familiar port to give your laptop a much-needed power boost? It’s a clever idea, born from a moment of need, but the reality of how these ports work might surprise you.
Why HDMI Isn’t a Power Source
Simply put, an HDMI port is designed for one primary job: transmitting high-quality audio and video signals from your computer to a monitor or TV. It’s a one-way street for data, not for delivering power to the laptop itself. While the port does carry a very small amount of electricity—enough to communicate with the display device—it’s only about 5 volts and 50 milliamps. What to Do When Your Charger is Missing
If you find yourself without your original charger, don’t reach for the HDMI cable. Instead, look for a USB-C port on your laptop and see if you can borrow a compatible charger. You could also consider purchasing a universal laptop charger that comes with multiple tips, ensuring you get the right fit and power specifications for your machine. This is a far safer and more reliable solution than trying to use a port for something it was never meant to do.
While it’s a creative thought, using an HDMI cable to charge your laptop isn’t a feasible solution. For the sake of your laptop’s health and your own safety, always stick to the designated charging methods provided by the manufacturer.
