how to find the model of a laptop

Knowing your laptop’s exact model number is more important than you might think. Whether you’re looking to sell it, download the correct drivers, or simply order a compatible replacement part, having this information is the first step. It’s the key to getting the right support and keeping your machine running smoothly.

Check the Physical Laptop

The quickest way to find your model is often right on the device itself. Turn your laptop over and look for a sticker or etched writing on the bottom case. This label usually displays the manufacturer, like Dell or HP, followed by the model name and number. If you don’t see it there, check around the screen bezel, the palm rest below the keyboard, or even inside the battery compartment after safely removing the battery.

Use the System Information Tool

If the sticker is worn off or you can’t power on the laptop, your computer’s operating system can tell you what you need to know. On Windows, simply press the Windows key + R to open the Run dialog box. Type msinfo32 and press Enter. The System Information window that opens will list your System Model clearly. On most systems, you can also click the Start button, type System Information, and select it from the results.

Look Inside the BIOS/UEFI

For another reliable method, you can check the BIOS or UEFI firmware settings. Restart your computer and press a specific key repeatedly as it boots up (common keys are F2, F10, or Delete). The correct key is usually displayed on the screen during startup. Once inside the BIOS/UEFI menu, navigate using your keyboard arrows. The model information is typically found on the main screen or under a system information tab.

Find Your Original Packaging or Receipt

Don’t forget about the box your laptop came in! The model number is almost always printed on the original packaging. If you’ve kept the receipt or the order confirmation from an online purchase, that information should be listed there as well. This is a great option if your laptop is currently unusable.

With these simple methods, you should be able to locate your laptop’s model number without any trouble. It’s a small piece of information that makes a big difference when you need help or want to upgrade your device.
