Thankfully, your Mac has this functionality built right in, and it’s more powerful than you might think.
The Essential Keyboard Shortcuts for Screenshots
For most of your screen-capturing needs, a few simple keyboard combinations will do the trick. The main modifier key you’ll use is Command (⌘) + Shift. From there, you add a number to choose the type of screenshot you want. Press Command + Shift + 3 to instantly capture your entire screen. If you only need a specific portion, press Command + Shift + 4. Your cursor will change to a crosshair, allowing you to click and drag to select the exact area you want to capture.
Capturing a Specific Window or Menu
Need a clean picture of a single window, like a browser window or a dialog box? This is a hidden gem of the screenshot tool. First, press Command + Shift + 4. Your cursor becomes a crosshair. Now, instead of dragging, press the Spacebar. The crosshair will turn into a small camera icon. You can then move this camera over any window, and it will highlight in blue. Using the Screenshot App for More Control
If you prefer a visual interface or need to set a timer, the Screenshot app is your best friend. You can open it by pressing Command + Shift + 5. This brings up a small control panel at the bottom of your screen. From here, you can choose to capture the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion. You also have options to record your screen. A key feature here is the “Options” menu, where you can set a timer, choose where to save the file, and even turn the mouse pointer on or off in the capture.
Where to Find Your Screenshots
By default, all your screenshots are saved directly to your desktop with a name like “Screenshot [date] at [time].png”. This makes them very easy to find. If you’d rather they go somewhere else, you can change this in the Screenshot app’s Options menu when you use Command + Shift + 5. For a temporary copy that goes to your clipboard instead of saving a file, simply add the Control key to any of the shortcuts. For example, Control + Command + Shift + 3 will copy the full screen, ready for you to paste into an email or document.
