Staring at a screen that’s either too dim or blindingly bright can be a real strain, both on your eyes and your productivity. Getting your laptop’s brightness just right is one of those small adjustments that makes a huge difference. It can help reduce eye fatigue during long work sessions and even save a bit of battery life when you’re on the go. The good news is that adjusting it is usually a quick and simple process, and you have several methods to choose from.
The Quickest Way with Your Keyboard
For most people, the fastest method is right on your keyboard. Look at the top row of keys, specifically the function keys (F1, F2, etc.). You should see two keys with symbols that look like a sun—one for increasing brightness (often a sun with a plus) and one for decreasing it (a sun with a minus). To use them, simply hold down the Fn key (usually near the bottom-left corner of the keyboard) and press the corresponding brightness key. Some newer laptops might let you use these keys without holding Fn.
Using the Windows Settings Menu
If your keyboard doesn’t have these keys or you prefer a visual slider, Windows has you covered. Click on the battery, volume, and Wi-Fi icon group in the bottom-right corner of your taskbar. This opens the Quick Settings panel. You should see a brightness slider right there; just click and drag it to your preferred level. For more options, you can also go to Settings > System > Display, where you’ll find the same slider along with other helpful display adjustments.
When Your Screen is Still Too Dark
Sometimes, even at 100%, your screen might seem dim. A common culprit is a battery-saving feature. Check your power settings by clicking on the battery icon in the taskbar. If a power saver mode is active, it often lowers brightness to conserve energy. Switching to a Better performance or Best performance plan can restore full brightness. It’s also a good idea to ensure your display drivers are updated, as this can sometimes resolve brightness control issues.
Adaptive Brightness and Your Battery
Many modern laptops include a feature called Content adaptive brightness control or something similar. This clever setting automatically adjusts your screen’s brightness based on what you’re viewing and the lighting in your room. While handy, it can sometimes be a little too active. If you find the automatic changes distracting, you can turn this off in your display settings under Brightness to maintain full manual control.
Finding your perfect brightness level is a personal preference that can make using your laptop much more comfortable. Whether you use the keyboard shortcuts for speed or the settings menu for precision, taking a moment to adjust this simple setting is a small step that pays off in greater comfort throughout your day.
