Have you ever needed to change the boot order to install a new operating system, enable virtualization for software development, or troubleshoot a hardware issue on your Lenovo laptop? All these tasks require accessing a special environment called the BIOS or UEFI firmware settings. This low-level software is the first thing that starts when you press the power button, and it controls how your computer’s core components communicate.
While it might sound technical, entering the BIOS setup on a Lenovo laptop is usually a straightforward process. The most common method involves pressing a specific key right as the computer begins to start up. Let’s look at the simple steps to get you there.
The Quick Key Method for Most Lenovo Laptops
For the vast majority of Lenovo laptops, the key you need is the F1 or F2 key. The trick is all about timing. First, shut down your laptop completely—do not just restart it. Next, press the power button to turn it on. Immediately after pressing the power button, begin repeatedly tapping either the F1 or F2 key on your keyboard. Continue tapping until you see the BIOS setup screen appear, which typically has a blue or grey background with a menu-based interface.
What to Do If the Quick Key Doesn’t Work
If you find that pressing F1 or F2 doesn’t bring up the BIOS, don’t worry. Some newer laptops, especially those with Windows 10 or Windows 11, use a feature called “Fast Startup.” This can make the boot process so fast that the computer doesn’t register your key presses in time. In this case, you can use a method within Windows itself.
Go to your Windows Settings, then navigate to Update & Security (or System > Recovery in Windows 11). Look for “Advanced startup” and click the Restart now button. Your computer will reboot into a special menu. From there, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings. This will restart your laptop and take you directly into the BIOS setup utility.
A Handy Alternative: The Novo Button
Many Lenovo laptops feature a small, dedicated button called the Novo Button. You’ll usually find it on the side of the device or next to the power button, often with a curved arrow icon. To use it, make sure your laptop is completely off. Then, press the Novo Button (you might need a paperclip for a small pinhole-style button). This will bring up a menu where you can select BIOS Setup to enter the configuration screen directly.
