You’ve just unboxed your new ThinkPad or perhaps you’re returning to one after it’s been powered down for a while. That iconic black design is familiar, but when you press the power button, nothing happens. Don’t worry, this is a common situation and it’s almost always a simple fix. Let’s walk through the straightforward steps to get your ThinkPad up and running.
Locating the Power Button
The first step is finding the power button. On most modern ThinkPad models, the power button is a circular or rectangular button located on the right side of the keyboard, above the Delete key and below the screen hinge. It often has the universal power symbol—a circle with a vertical line through the top. Some newer models even incorporate a fingerprint reader directly into the power button for added security.
The Simple Startup Process
Once you’ve found the button, turning on your ThinkPad is simple. Press the power button firmly once and then release it. You don’t need to hold it down. Within a few seconds, you should see the power indicator light turn on, hear the fan start, and see the Lenovo or ThinkPad logo appear on your screen. The system will then begin loading Windows or your operating system.
When Your ThinkPad Doesn’t Respond

It’s used for system recovery or accessing the BIOS. For everyday use, you’ll want to stick with the main power button on the keyboard deck.
